Annual Report 2023 – Solid 2023 accounts from the Genan group following a challenging 2022

World-largest mechanical tire recycling group, Danish-owned Genan, achieved a turnover of EUR 58.7 million in 2023. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to a minor, 7% drop. Despite lower sales, EBITDA increased by more than 50% to close to EUR 9.4 million. Operating profits (EBIT) multiplied from just over EUR 750,000 to EUR 3.2 million, while net earnings, negatively impacted by currency exchange rates, increased to EUR 2 million compared to EUR 1.5 million in 2022. The Genan group considers the annual accounts to be satisfactory, expecting a continued, positive development of key financial ratios in 2024. Read our 2023 annual report

Facts about rubber

SBR or ELT rubber – which is the more correct term? SBR and ELT are acronyms frequently used when car tires – and specifically worn-down car tyres – are on the agenda. But what do these acronyms actually mean? What is SBR? SBR stands for styrene butadiene rubber – a synthetic rubber mixture which consists of approx. 25% styrene and 75% butadiene, joined in a co-polymer to form a general-purpose, synthetic rubber. Properties and purposes Boasting properties like good abrasion resistance, aging stability and long-range elasticity, virgin SBR rubber has proven an excellent choice for the manufacture of numerous rubber products from gaskets to conveyor belts – and has in particular become extensively used in the car tire industry. In fact, more than half of all tires produced contain various types of styrene-butadine rubber. Car tires are not made entirely from styrene-butadiene rubber, though. Natural rubber is an equally significant ingredient (particularly in lorry and OTR tyres), and numerous other additives are included to make high-quality rubber compounds for the manufacture of tires. SBR and natural rubber have different properties. Where SBR rubber hardens over timer, natural rubber goes softer; and where SBR rubber performs poorly in terms of tear strength, natural rubber excels. Different types of SBR Styrene-butadiene rubber can be produced in two different ways. Emulsion SBR (ESBR) can be produced as either hot emulsion SBR or as cold emulsion SBR. Emulsion SBR is typically used for light-duty tires, whereas solution SBR (SSBR) is the preferred option for high-performance tires. Solution SBR is the most expensive of the two types – but despite the cost, it continues to be the most extensively used SBR rubber, performing better in terms of both tensile strength and elasticity.

Annual Report 2022 – Record-high turnover: but high energy prices limit earnings

World-largest tire recycler, Danish environmental company Genan, achieved a record turnover of more than EUR 62 million last year, representing a 4.6% increase in comparison with the previous year. Yet earnings dropped from close to EUR 3.5 million in 2021 to EUR 1.5 million in 2022 – mainly due to high energy and freight prices. Read our 2022 annual report
